New Forest Ponies

pony4.JPGOne thing that you can’t fail to spot as you drive through parts of Hampshire and into Dorset is the expanse that is the New Forest. The new forest is an area of pasture and heathland that stretches roughly from Southampton to Ringwood and north into parts of Wiltshire.

One of the most striking things about the New Forest are the ponies that roam throughout. Ponies have been present in the New Forest from at least 1016. And there are a number of varieties of the Ponies and they are more prevalent in some areas of the forest – These parts of the forest with discrete groups of ponies are commonly called “haunts”.

While they may appear wild the ponies are in fact owned by the New Forest Commoners and the foals are often reared and then sold and trained for a variety of equine needs the New forest pony information site is an excellent site for those looking to find out more.
