Best places to see ponies in the New Forest

One of the most popular things to do in the New Forest is to go pony spotting – New Forest Ponies are prevalent throughout the New Forest but can be seen in larger numbers in certain areas.

Driving? Well for our first Pony spotting option try heading past Southampton on the M27 – onto the A31 – look for the signs for Emery Down – over the cattle grid and your into Pony territory – enjoy the beautiful views over the heath land – follow the road for a few miles until you reach Emery Down – into the village and then west at the pub towards Linwood. The road will wind and take you through Bolderwood and on towards Linwood eventually leading you to Ringwood.

On a bright day this is an excellent route to see the New Forest at its best – taking in heath land, Forest and some of the villages on route – plenty of picnic spots along the way if you want to stop (just remember NOT to feed the ponies).

Want to experience the ponies on foot? For option two – Head over to Burley village – leave the car behind and explore the village on foot – plenty of quaint shops – and some fine pubs. Burley is usually a fine place to spot Forest Ponies and you can usually find them ambling through the village – this is also a good spot for donkeys and other animals (such as cattle) that roam the forest.
