Deer spotting in the New Forest

One of the best sites in the New Forest is the wild Deer that roam in certain parts of the heath land.

There are a couple of breeds of deer within the Forest including Roe, Fallow and Red Deer can be spotted (the Red Deer however are scarce).

One of the best spots for watching the Deer is at Bolderwood (Follow the signs from the A31 after Ringwood, as you head towards Southampton ). Bolderwood has a Deer viewing spot and excellent car parking (in summer be sure to take a picnic as there are plenty of open spaces to lay out your blanket and enjoy the scenery)

At the right time of year, catch the Forest Rangers at Bolderwood feeding the animals – be sure to take your binoculars as access is limited to within a few hundred feet of the animals.

Several of the villages within the Forest can also be good for spotting Deer, Burley has tractor rides in the summer to see the Deer, Ashurst on the fringe of the Forest is a good spot for Red Deer. Also keep your eyes open as you travel along the A31 or A35 through the forest – early in the morning you may just catch a glimpse of deer either in the Forest or on the Farmland around the area.
