Surfing at Bournemouth Pier

Whilst Dorset may not be first on the list of surfer’s paradise – it may surprise many that there are numerous places to surf around the county. Of these one of the most popular is by Bournemouth Pier.

Benefiting from a convenient location with ample “close by” parking the pier attracts a number of surfers throughout the year with the best “rides” to the east of the pier.

Whilst surf is available across the entire Bournemouth seafront (from Boscombe to Bournemouth) the water around the pier is often crowded (particularly late in the year when the waves reach their peak).

Offering an ideal spot for learners – the waves are often home for both body boarders and “stand ups” – the local council – having spotted the potential tourist attractions – are soon to commence work on an artificial reef (made up of sandbags) – situated at nearby Boscombe – this will offer larger waves across a wider space and offer even more to entice both new and old hand surfers.
